instructor: Peter Cho
class: Communication Design 3 . summer 2008 . term 3

About
For this piece, we were asked to research on a topic related to the food crisis. We were then asked
to translate and organize our findings into a web–based interaction design. I chose to focus on the
idea of food–related health disorders, namely eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa.
Rollover the images below to reveal information or testimonials related to eating disorders.

How are eating disorders related to the food crisis?
In America, food consumption has often been portrayed negatively in a way that has been
discouraging to society. In the midst of campaigning for healthy eating habits, for supporting diet
fads, and combating food–related issues such as obesity, American society and culture has also
projected food consumption as something of a negative action, that has often led many people to
suffer from psycho physiological effects that are diagnosed as eating disorders or disordered
eating habits. Because of the extreme harmful nature of many eating disorder, we should be able
to view this as a food crisis, or if anything, a crisis which has implications based on the idea of
food and it's relationship to the body and to one's relationship to greater society.

LOVE HATE FOOD serves as an informational tool to help users understand some of the facts
and issues surrounding various types of food–related health disorders. The hundred people you
will view below each represent a portion of the estimated 24 million people with an eating
disorder. By rolling over several of the representations, you will be able to read not only statistics,
but definitions as well as testimonials of real people who have suffered form these disorders.

To note: Statistics and definitions only tell us so much. Many people suffering from eating
disorders are too embarrassed or afraid to reveal their issues. Many are in denial. We must
remembers that these people should also be taken into consideration.
